In localization, a Glossary is a centralized list of key terms, brand names, and definitions coupled with their approved translations for target languages. It acts as a rulebook for both AI engines and human translators to ensure consistent terminology usage across a project, preventing confusion and maintaining brand voice.
Preventing Terminology Chaos
Without a glossary, the word "Home" might be translated as "Maison" (house) instead of "Accueil" (homepage) in French. Product names might vary: "Our CRM Tool" becomes "Notre Outil CRM" in one place and "Notre Système CRM" in another, confusing users. A glossary defines that "Home" = "Accueil," "CRM Tool" = "Outil CRM" (never change), and "Save" = "Enregistrer" (not "Sauvegarder"). This is fed into Translation Memory systems and provided to all translators, ensuring every occurrence is translated identically.
